I’ve spent just over 9 years working at MLT and today is my last day. It feels strange just writing those words. I am about to take on a different challenge that I hope will be positive for my career and my family. The whole process that I’ve gone through these last few months, and more specifically weeks, has been very difficult. After a lot of deliberation and a few sleepless nights, I decided that this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. However, this means I’m about to leave my “work family” and something doesn’t feel good about that. I’ve left other jobs before, admittedly shorter duration jobs, and didn’t have this type of feeling on the last few days. Let me explain why that is.
So where do I start? The beginning is usually a good place....
A few years removed from my Electrical Engineering Technician course at NBCC, I had gone back and forth with the manager to discuss joining the team. I had lots of questions, since I didn’t quite understand what this company was about. Questions like: what they did, what specifically would I be doing, would I be good at it and would I like it. Even with some examples of DDPs, and a site visit in a Telco Headend, I was still very unsure. One thing I did know was that this company wasn’t like any other I’d worked for before. This was evident when I had an interview at a bar to discuss how I was going to fit into the team. I checked most of the typical check boxes (Tech-friendly, Responsible, Motivated, Resourceful, etc.), but we both wanted the “fit” to be right.
A colleague of mine recently wrote a blog that I really liked: Creative Girl in a Technical World: Why Hiring Creative People is the Best Decision for Your Business! She discusses how, at the start of her employment at MLT, doubts were creeping in her head. Does she belong here; is she contributing; what is she bringing to the table. I found it funny because it brought back memories of when I started. Due to the learning curve, it took me a while to “fit in” with the work, but the environment, the collaboration, the management, the overall direction of the company and most importantly the people were where I “fit in” right away.
Since my first day, the work environment here at MLT has been great. Everyone was helpful, everyone cared to see others, and ultimately the company, succeeded. The energy was great, and the collaboration made hanging out after work a joy as well.
The motto was “Work Hard; Play Hard”. While going through old event pictures earlier this week, to save a few for myself, I came to the conclusion that we obviously worked hard, since we played really hard! From summer parties, to Christmas parties with some “Social Fridays” and volunteering in the middle, is that made my coworkers my “work family”.
As the company has grown threefold (if not more) over the years, the people still define this company. We have a leader that is second to none. He has a vision, and a passion for this company and its employees that is just incredible. Employees are encouraged to be creative, to explore, to be bring different ideas. We have managers that are supporting, entrusting and bring positivity to every challenge. This type of leadership in a company is invaluable. MLT is going on its 17th year in operation, and its impressive to see the direction it is headed.
I know next week I’ll be very excited to embark on my new adventure, but right now, at this very moment, sadness is my overwhelming feeling. I wish nothing but the best to everyone at MLT, and MLT as a company. I won’t be far away, so I’ll be keeping in-touch.
It’s unfortunate, but it’s time to say Goodbye. For the past 9 years, I was a pretty good fit for MLT and MLT was an even GREATER fit for me!
